💙FINISHED QUILT:💙Front piecing: This nap quilt is made using the "Stack-n-Whack" method. The pattern arrangement is known as "Venetian Tiles".
It contains over 280 - 45° triangles, arranged into 35 individual octagons, all made from Kaffe Fassett's Collective Vintage - Grandiose in Taupe by Philip Jacobs fabric. The octagons are connected together with 48 cornerstones. Before being joined together, each of the octagons and cornerstones are bordered with 1/2" strips of Blank Quilting's Baroque fabric in brown.
Border: A 2" inner border made from a Robert Kaufman blue batik surrounds the completed "Venetian Tiles" pattern, followed by a 5" final outer border using Kaffe Fassett's Collective Vintage - Grandiose in Taupe by Philip Jacobs.
Backing: Backing fabric is a 2018 blue paisley hombre print by Dan Morris Design for QT Fabrics.
Quilt Stitching, Thread: The front is stitched using "Billings Blue" (So Fine 50 #474) thread.
Quilt Stitching, Thread: The quilt back is stitched with "Delphinium" (So Fine 50 #478) thread.
Binding: Cat used two different fabrics to make a flange binding for this quilt, which she attached by machine. She used Lilac by Robert Kaufman and Seashore Ocean Bubbles batik, also by Robert Kaufman.

Construction-Kaleidoscope Octagons:
Using Kaffe Fassett's Collective Vintage - Grandiose in Taupe by Philip Jacobs, Cat measured the repeat of the fabric and carefully lined up 8 identical layers. She then cut 35 triangles through from the top layer, totaling 280 - 45° triangles in groups of 8.
Before joining the triangles together to make the octagons, she first bordered 1/2" strips of Blank Quilting's Baroque fabric in brown onto each individual triangle.
Lots of sliver trimming had to take place to assure perfect piecing (one of Cat's specialties)!
Using the same layering method (but cutting through 4 layers instead of 8), Cat then cut out the triangles to make the 48 square cornerstones.
All cornerstone pieces with their 1/2" border attached, ready to be sewn together into squares.
Construction-Borders:
Once all octagons and cornerstones were sewn together, Cat planned the borders.
She first added a 2" inner border made from a Robert Kaufman blue batik.
Then she added a final 5" outer border using more of Kaffe Fassett's Collective Vintage - Grandiose in Taupe by Philip Jacobs.
Quilting:
Cat auditions quite a few thread colors, choosing to use "Billings Blue" (So Fine 50 #474) for the front of the quilt, and "Delphinium" (So Fine 50 #478) on the back.
Backing loaded (right side facing down/out). Ready to place the batting.
With backing and batting loaded, the quilt top "floats" as the top layer, creating a quilt sandwich.
Quilting was stitched using edge-to-edge "Rose is a Rose 2" from My Creative Stitches.
It's a loose, flowy design that worked great with this quilt, stitched out very nicely. It was easily modified (resize, join, repeat, wrap, etc) in my ProStitcher software.
Beginning the first of 15 rows.
All of the octagons and cornerstones are pieced so beautifully, and the quilting ties them all together!
"Billings Blue" (So Fine 50 #474) colored thread is perfect for this quilt.
While quilting, we still ran into an issue where there was more fullness in an area than there should have been, likely due to some of the triangles having to be cut on the bias. So we used the "soup can" or "water bottle" trick to gently ease the quilt stitching across the fabric before and after the location of the fullness. Worked great!
Quilting row #15 - last one!
Even before the quilt is removed from the longarm, I really appreciate the lovely texture created by stitching out "Rose is a Rose 2".
Trimming:
Immediately after trimming, before attaching the binding to the quilt, Cat sews a stay stitch all the way around the quilt's perimeter, to secure the quilting stitches at the very edge.
Binding:
Cat used two different fabrics to create a flange binding for this quilt: Lilac and Seashore Ocean Bubbles batik fabrics, both by Robert Kaufman.
She then, very carefully and precisely, used her sewing machine to attach the flange binding to the quilt.
Washing:
The finished quilt was washed before gifting (cold water, no bleach) using dye trapping sheets (I use either Color Catchers or Color Grabbers).
After washing, the quilt is just scrunchy and soft enough! Ready for gifting, its softness can be enjoyed by Cat's daughter, who is stationed overseas in the military.
